Bonnie Garmus

Author of the Year Main Box

Crafting stories with the elegance of a fountain pen, inspired by the masters of literature. Congratulations, Bonnie Garmus, @bonnie_garmus_author  on being awarded Author of the Year The British Book Awards for her exceptional book, "Lessons in Chemistry”

To commemorate your remarkable book, Montegrappa has created a special 1/1 bespoke pen inspired by the vibrant colours and captivating themes of your novel.

Débuts do not come much bigger or better than Bonnie Garmus’ Lessons in Chemistry. Published in April 2022, it has spent 35 weeks near the top of the charts, with more than 200,000 copies shifted in the UK TCM and rights sold in 40 territories.

Moving to London in 2017 and feeling lonely in a new city, Garmus signed up to a creative writing course, which is how she met her agent, Felicity Blunt at Curtis Brown. Blunt led a 16-way auction during lockdown 2020, with Transworld emerging as the victor. “Never has the entire company been so hungry and determined to win a book,” the publisher noted.

The novel’s influence at this year’s Nibbies is pronounced, with nods for the Fiction: Début award and in the Marketing, Publicity, Imprint (Doubleday) and Agent (Felicity Blunt) categories.

As well as writing a truly original book, Garmus is also notable for being a 64-year-old début author, a rarity in an industry that often seems obsessed with the voice of youth. “I feel great about having reached this goal now, at this age,” she told The Bookseller ahead of publication in 2022. Lessons in Chemistry looks set for an even greater 2023: after its paperback release in March it notched up four consecutive Mass Market Fiction number ones.

Congratulations to Bonnie Garmus, British Book Awards Author of the year

Marian Keyes

Marian Keyes is one of the most successful Irish authors of all time; the queen of writing accessible contemporary women’s fiction.Scratch that, she is one of the most successful authors ever in any genre, an expert storyteller tackling issues such as addiction, infidelity, bereavement, domestic violence, family life, identity, depression and, well, love.

Always with a warmth of heart and an abundance of wit. She is also a phenomenon. Over 30 years and 15 genre-defying novels, her writing has created a space for millions of readers, who find in her novels joy and solace, light and dark, and, most of all, humour and hope. Her works have sold upwards of 7.5 million copies in the UK, with more than 30 million sold internationally—an incredible testament to how devoted fans and readers all over the world are to her words.

Her staying power is immense. Few writers can carve out a three-decade career, even fewer with books as relevant in 2022 as they were pre-Millennium. Her latest, Again, Rachel (published in hardback earlier this year) demonstrated her pull on readers: an instant bestseller, her 2022 sales are so far 131% up in volume.

The British Book Awards is proud to recognise Marian Keyes as its Author of the Year.

THE BRITISH BOOKSELLER AWARDS 2021 - RICHARD OSMAN

Congratulations to Richard Osman, named Author of the Year at the 2021 British Book Awards. The Montegrappa-sponsored prize was awarded at last week’s virtual ceremony – accompanied by an Extra Custom fountain pen, decked out in celluloid shades inspired by the jacket design of ‘The Thursday Murder Club’.

The prestigious ‘Nibbies’ trophy caps a year of highs for the 50-year-old author and television presenter. Osman’s debut novel became Britain’s fastest selling crime book upon release, and has spent more than 25 weeks atop the UK fiction charts. Set in an up-market retirement home in Kent, the light-hearted crime thriller sees a group of amateur sleuths plunged in the middle of a live murder case. Film rights have already been snapped up by Steven Spielberg, and we suspect Mr. Osman has a great deal more writing ahead of him.

Montegrappa’s support of last year's British Book Awards culminated in a special, custom-made fountain pen for Bernadine Evaristo (medium fountain). 2020’s British Author of the Year was also recognised on the night with the fiction prize for her acclaimed novel Girl, Woman, Other.

The gold-nibbed ZERO Custom was designed by the author herself, who borrowed from the colours of her best-seller’s hardback edition to inspire a vivacious pastel livery. We were delighted to receive her acknowledgement via Instagram: “It’s absolutely gorgeous. What a treat!”

Affectionately known as the Nibbies, the awards marked their 30th anniversary with a virtual ceremony hosted in London on 29 June. Alongside the awards for Evaristo, Candice Carty-Williams’ Queenie was awarded Book of the Year in a landmark year for women of colour.

BOISDALE LIFE MAGAZINE HONOURS THE PRESTIGIOUS CONTRIBUTORS AT LONDON AWARDS CEREMONY HOSTED AT BOISDALE OF CANARY WHARF IN ASSOCIATION WITH TCS WORLD TRAVEL

On Wednesday 6th June 2018 Boisdale Life Magazine, of the eponymous restaurant group, hosted the annual Boisdale Life Editors Lunch and Awards in association with TCS World Travel to thank and celebrate all of the writers, interviewees and key partners that have supported and participated in the success of Boisdale Life magazine over the last three years.

The relationship between Boisdale and its customers extends beyond food, drink and music to an identifiable and diverse approach to life, and the event was a celebration of the wonderful writers that gave Boisdale Life its strongly libertarian and free thinking media voice.

Boisdale Life Magazine was, in part, founded on the ideals of libertarianism and often addresses real or perceived infringement by the government on individual liberties. Contributors to the magazine have included, Tom Parker Bowles, William Sitwell, Claire Fox, Ella Whelan, Mark Littlewood, Roger Bootle, Bruce Anderson, Nicolai Tolstoi and Nick Ferrari, to name a few, all of whom attended the congratulatory lunch at Boisdale of Canary Wharf. Travel Column of The Year winner Stanley Johnson was accompanied at the event by Made In Chelsea's Georgia 'Toff' Toffolo, who reunited with her best pal following her appearance on I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here.
