The Montegrappa Hemingway collection is segmented into "chapters" in a nod to its namesake: the Soldier, the Writer, the Fisherman and the Traveller each representing a facet and stage of Hemingway’s life. These chapters are in turn embodied in a pen collection that includes 100 each: fountain pen, rollerball pen, and ballpoint. Celluloid, a material Montegrappa has employed for pen making since its earliest years, is used in the creation of the pens, which are trimmed in diamond-cut sterling silver. An additional ultra-limited edition of ten pieces in each mode and for each chapter are trimmed in 18-karat gold.
The color of celluloid for each chapter was carefully chosen, with the goal of creating a specific mood. Bamboo Black was used for the Solider, while Turtle Brown is the choice for the Writer, Mediterranean Blue for the Fisherman and Charcoal Black for the Traveller. Shown here is the newly released Soldier, whose barrel culminates in an engraved depiction of Bassano del Grappa’s famous bridge and city landmark, the Ponte degli Alpini. The Red Cross ambulance is also visible, accurately recalled as a Ford Model T as driven by Hemingway. Monte Grappa, the mountain, serves as the backdrop, and Montegrappa Tu Sei La Mia Patria—the title of a song written in 1918, the year Hemingway stayed in Bassano del Grappa—is engraved above. Hemingway’s initials grace the fountain pen’s nib, while the pocket clip features an Alpine edelweiss motif. The cap crown is decorated with a likeness of the medal for valor, which Hemingway received when injured in Italy. In keeping with the literary theme, the pen comes in special packaging reminiscent of a reporter’s notebook like those used during the First World War.

The first to be inaugurated is Ernest Hemingway – one of the most innovative and influential writers, reporters and novelists of the 20th century, and one who wrote, coincidentally, with Montegrappa pens.
The Montegrappa writing instruments collection named after the author is divided into four exclusive editions: “The Soldier”, “The Writer”, “The Fisherman” and “The Traveler”
Each of these four retells a particular life period or passion of his and is embodied in a pen, offered in the three types – fountain, roller and ballpoint pen. Each model in the four topics is a limited edition of 100 examples, totaling 300 pens for each subject. All pens in the series are produced in celluloid with Sterling Silver trim. Only 10 examples of each of the three pen types are trimmed with 18k Gold.
Of particular significance in the history of Montegrappa is Hemingway having spent time during World War I in Bassano del Grappa at Villa Cà Erizzo, next to the pen manufactory. One of his greatest works, A Farewell to Arms (1929), was inspired by his relationship with a nurse during his time in Veneto and many of the descriptions of the area draw inspiration from the views of Bassano, and so is The Soldier pen.
